Positive Developments

The month of March was a fruitful one for many in the Asian furniture trade. The circuit of trade shows around the region welcomed tens of thousands of visitors coming from all corners of the world. While there was expressed concern amongst some in China regarding the ongoing trade war between the country and US, most exporters nevertheless enjoyed brisk business, especially those Southeast Asia companies. Hopefully the boatloads of enquiries received turned into firm orders in the weeks following.

In March the Council of Asia Furniture Associations (CAFA), a regional association of national furniture associations around the Asian region, held its 22nd annual general meeting. Xiangnan Xu, President of China National Furniture Association (CNFA) was re-elected President of CAFA. Many office holders in the executive committee also had our appointments extended. I will be serving my 5th term as an advisor, providing assistance to the president on global affairs. The commitment shown and effort put in by Xu and CNFA are commendable as they have been relentlessly promoting CAFA and organising activities for the benefit of members.

Come May will be a meeting of the World Furniture Confederation, a yet geographically larger international grouping of furniture and related associations. Founded in 2006 with the objective to bring the furniture world closer together, the organisation has not been active after a grand summit held in Shanghai in 2007. With CNFA taking the lead to gather past members and invite new organisations, we can be sure the meeting will be successful. The question would be how to get all onboard to help sustain interest and jointly contribute.
